Monica Gil of Telemundo speaks to Know Your Value founder Mika Brzezinski about what it will take to close the wage gap for Latinas. Launched in 1998, the LATINA Style Business Series is the most successful business development program for Latina Business owners in the nation. The Series has visited 136 cities with over 38,000 women participating in the program. The Series emphasis is in creating a solid business foundation that will allow Latinas to take their business to the next level.

Situations like these are widespread, especially among households in which Black and Latina women live, according to Household Pulse Survey data. (See Figure 3.) About 1 in 3 Black and Latina women in households with incomes under $35,000 reported not being able to pay the previous month’s rent on time. And about half of Black and Latina women reported having little or no confidence that they would be able to pay next month’s rent, compared to less than a third of white women. Nationally, Black and Latina women have suffered a disproportionate loss of employment income in the current crisis due to their overrepresentation in retail and other service jobs, many of which ended abruptly when the pandemic started.

Generalized linear models with a log link were used to obtain prevalence ratios for dichotomous health indicators for women with a lifetime IPV history compared to women without a lifetime IPV history. Multivariable ordinary least squares regression was used to estimate mean differences in SF-36 scores and number of symptoms.

Additionally, the Latina population is increasingly becoming “primary wage earners and influencers” in the modern Hispanic United States Household. Latinx cultural values can trigger mental health issues in the lives of Latinx women and cause them to underutilize mental health services as compared to the general population. About one in four Latina teenagers have thought about committing suicide, a rate higher than Latino teenage counterparts, according to Salud America! 6 These rates are not only due to racial and gender discrimination, but are also a result of Latinx cultural values such familisimo and marianismo7. Familisimo, although it emphasizes a strong family unit, can inhibit Latina teenagers from embracing their own unique independent identity8.

Marianismo, rooted in Catholicism’s admiration of the Virgin Mary, is the belief that women must be pure, self sacrificing, pleasant, nurturing and demure9. Teenage Latinas are often met with pressure to meet these cultural standards, and this pressure can lead to development of anxiety and depression. These cultural factors do not favor reaching out for mental health assistance, making addressing the mental health concerns difficult. Despite this, many Latina women are finding their voice through mental health activism. Dior Vargas, a Latina feminist and mental health activists, created Color of My Mind, a collection of content from her People of Color Mental Health Phot Project.

Because individual and group education sessions achieved a similar level of patient satisfaction, Spalluto believes large-group education sessions during mammography screenings in this population may represent an opportunity to consolidate time and resources. Participants with access to the promotora had the opportunity to ask questions during both the education sessions and clinical services.

Participants were randomly assigned to either the AMIGAS HIV sexual risk reduction intervention or the general health comparison intervention. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention funded the study from August 2007 to August 2010. Latina principal investigators and coinvestigators led the study team, and the majority of the health department staff and project partners at Emory University and the CDC were Latino or were fluent in Spanish. The study team members were from Cuba, Central American countries, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico. We recruited 252 Latina women aged 18 to 35 years in Miami, Florida, in 2008 to 2009 and randomized them to the 4-session AMIGAS intervention or a 1-session health intervention.

The Affordable Care Act does not cover non-citizens nor does it cover immigrants with less than 5 years of residency. As a result, Latino immigrants struggle to gain health care once they enter the United States. Non-citizen Latinos often avoid hospitals and clinics for fear of deportation, leading to an increased risk of preventable diseases such as tuberculosis and Hepatitis in this population. Additionally, Latino health deteriorates as this population assimilates into unhealthy lifestyles associated with lower socioeconomic American populations.

Researchers said these data can inform clinical practice and care for pregnant women during the coronavirus pandemic, and be used to better understand the prevalence of the virus in the community, and how socio-economic factors and inequities may affect its spread. In the United States, an estimate of at least ten thousand people are forced into labor through such a process.

The Wage Gap For Latina Workers Is Still 54 Cents That’S Troubling.

Despite discrimination in the workforce, Latina participation is on the rise. From 1970 to 2007 Latinas have seen a 14% increase in labor force participation, which the Center for American Progress calls “a notable rise.” HBNA offers opportunities to California students who wish to pursue higher education and a career in business. NHBWA is a nonprofit organization established in 1997 to “empower and encourage women and business owners to develop and increase their business through educational seminars and speakers, by offering mutual support, the sharing of information, business referrals, and networking.” LATINA Style , launched in 1994, was the first national magazine published addressing the needs and interests of Latinas.

There is a significant lack of literature on the home life experience of Latina women and how it may change with immigration to the United States. In the United States, female employment has become an increasingly important determinant of family economic well-being, especially among disadvantaged populations such as Latinas. Female employment offers these women more autonomy, the chance to support themselves without relying on a spouse.

The precariousness of the low-wage labor market, including frequent job loss and unpredictable hours, means that a number of low-wage workers are between jobs at any given time. Others are out of the workforce due to individual or family challenges that keep them from working, such as health or mental health issues, or are working in informal jobs or are undocumented and thus do not qualify for unemployment insurance if laid off. In February 2020, about 5 million people were actively seeking work but not employed. Latina women earn 46% less than white men and 31% less than white women, the worst gender wage gap for any group of minority women, according to 2019 data. The disaggregation of the white male premium and Hispanic woman penalty detailed in Figure 7 sheds light on the mechanism through which the wage gap changes with rising education.

About 3 in 5 Latina women and more than half of Black women in households with incomes below $35,000 report that someone in their household lost employment income since March 13. (See Figure 1.) Latina women were 16 percentage points likelier than white women in the same income category — and Black women 12 percentage points likelier — to report loss of employment income in their household. Providers may also deliver interventions that they have developed on their own or with research partners.37 Ours was the first successful efficacy trial of a systematic linguistic and cultural adaptation of an evidence-based intervention for use with a diverse Latina population.

Even if an ethnic minority is white-passing, when their nationality is revealed it may heighten their sexual appeal to people that value exoticism. But while Latina teens have amuch higher rateof teenage pregnancies than their white peers, they don’t have sex more often than their white counterparts. In fact, a2009 studylooking at sexual health factors in teens by race and ethnicity shows that the female rate of teenage intercourse for Latinas and non-Latina whites are identical, with 45% of teen girls from both racial/ethnic groups reporting having had sex.

Mass Incarceration And The Prison Industrial Complex Only Affect Latino Men

That’s nearly 11 months longer, meaning that Latina workers had to work all of 2018 and then this far—to November 20! Put another way, a Latina would have to be in the workforce for 57 years to earn what a non-Hispanic white man would earn after 30 years in the workforce. Unfortunately, Hispanic women are subject to adouble pay gap—an ethnic pay gap and a gender pay gap. And, this pay gap widened over previous year when it “only” took until November 1 for Hispanic women catch up to non-Hispanic men.
